Good Samaritan Pulled Women From Fair Oaks Crash That Killed 4

FAIR OAKS (CBS13) — A deadly crash has left two families in mourning as investigators comb through what happened.

Four people were killed and several others were injured when a Buick and a Subaru Outback collided at San Juan and Palm avenues in Fair Oaks at 1:30 a.m. on Friday.

Joseph and Kelly Cruz rushed out of their home to help the survivors. The Buick was already on fire.

Joseph was able to pull two women from the backseat before the car was engulfed in flames. The California Highway Patrol says a woman who survived wouldn't be alive if it weren't for him.

The CHP says the Buick crossed into opposing traffic and hit the Subaru head on. Speed doesn't appear to be a factor.

The Subaru driver, David Mazur, survived, but is severely injured, and officers haven't been able to interview him.

Four people from the Buick died. The fifth passenger and only survivor was the one who Cruz pulled from the car.

The CHP doesn't know why the Buick caught fire so quickly.

"We really don't know why it burst into flames," said CHP spokesman Chad Hertzell. "We're trying to determine if its a faulty vehicle or if there was something on board to cause it to burst into flames."
