Father Accused Of Leaving Infant Child Outside On Cold Christmas Morning

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A father accused of leaving his 6-month-old girl outside in the cold early Christmas morning has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment charges.

The Los Angeles City Attorney's office announced the case against 29-year-old Jose Chavarria on Monday.

Prosecutors said neighbors discovered Chavarria's infant daughter crying in her stroller outside his Pacoima home at about 2:10 a.m. Christmas Day. The temperature outside was 49 degrees and witnesses said the child was cold to the touch.

Officers said they found Chavarria passed out in the home and that he appeared to be heavily intoxicated. They said he struggled with officers before his arrest.

Chavarria faces up to 2 years in jail if convicted.

The child has been placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services.
