180-Plus People Rescued On Snowy Mountain Highways
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say more than 180 people have been rescued from dozens of vehicles that got stuck on snowbound highways during heavy snowfall in the San Bernardino Mountains.
San Bernardino County fire spokeswoman Tracey Martinez says 136 people got stranded late Tuesday in about a foot of snow along Highway 138 near Crestline. She says firefighters finished the overnight rescues by about 3 a.m. Wednesday, and no serious crashes or injuries were reported.
Martinez says some vehicles could drive away after snowplows cleared away the powder, while other people left their cars on the highway and walked to a shelter at church or their homes.
Near Mount Baldy, snow stranded 50 other people who needed rescue.
