Idaho Manslaughter Suspect Arrested In Truckee

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) - Idaho authorities are seeking to return from California a man suspected in the New Year's Day shooting death of his girlfriend in southeast Idaho.

Kevin Michael McQuilliams, 26, was arrested in Truckee, California, about 6 p.m. Thursday without incident after Idaho officials issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of aggravated assault and involuntary manslaughter.

The shooting occurred at 1:30 a.m. Thursday and AnnaRae Ponce, 34, of Pocatello died at the scene, authorities in Idaho Falls, Idaho, said.

McQuilliams, who is from Idaho, is being held at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada City, California, Connie Knuckles of the Nevada County District Attorney's Office in California said Friday.

He will go before a judge Monday to be asked whether he will voluntarily return to Idaho to face charges, Knuckles said.

Bonneville County Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Daniel Clark said he will seek to extradite McQuilliams if McQuilliams declines to return voluntarily.

Clark said he couldn't talk about the details of the case, but he noted that the charge McQuilliams faces, involuntary manslaughter, involves reckless or criminal negligence.

It doesn't appear that McQuilliams intended Ponce as a target, Idaho Falls police said. They were at an Idaho Falls home to attend a house party, police said.

McQuilliams appears to have switched vehicles to avoid capture, police in Nevada said. The Truckee Police Department said officers were monitoring the Interstate 80 corridor when they spotted McQuilliams.

McQuilliams' 4-year-old son was with him when he was arrested, authorities said. The child was unharmed and placed in protective custody.

Clark declined to say whether police had found the weapon used in the shooting. But police have collected evidence and witness accounts, he said.

"It's certainly unfortunate that that type of thing happens in our community," Clark said. "But we will deal with it, and it will be handled accordingly."
