Suspected Roseville Retirement Home Burglar Caught On Surveillance Camera

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — A Sacramento woman is accused of breaking into a Roseville retirement community where her grandfather lived, and may be connected to even more break-ins.

Things had been going missing for months, with one victim saying she had even caught the suspected thief in her apartment, only to be pushed out of the way.

It wasn't until surveillance cameras were installed that they found a connection to one of the residents.

The cameras captured a woman in a black mask going from floor to floor and door to door, said Sierra Regency Executive Director Mary Dustin.

"And then she'll check the door and then she'll see if it's unlocked," she said.

She knew right away it was the suspected thief, targeting the seniors at Sierra Regency.

Liz Gates is just one of at least 16 victimized as she slept.

"She took some jewelry and some cash which isn't that much and she took drugs," Gates said.

Dustin and her staff began watching the cameras on their cellphones at all times of the day, hoping to catch the woman in the act.

Michael Hale, the maintenance guy got the closest. He tried to run after her, but missed her by just six seconds.

"I was like I'm gonna get this person i don't know who it is," Dustin said.

Little did she know, the suspect would give them a big clue. Days after Christmas, she showed up again, but this time without a mask.

Michael recognized her right away as the granddaughter of one of their residents, Haleigh Carrigan. Carrigan was arrested the next day.

"It's just a really good example of the community working together," said Roseville Police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther.

Carrigan could face more charges, and there was evidence found at her home that could tie her to break-ins at other retirement communities in Roseville.
