Sacramento Rabbi Not Surprised Jews Targeted By Radical Muslims In France

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — As Rabbi Mendy Cohen readied his synagogue on Friday for the Jewish sabbath, the deadly events in France were on his mind.

A gunman linked to the attack at the offices of a French magazine stormed a kosher supermarket on the edge of Paris, killing four inside. Authorities believe he was a radical islamist targeting Jews.

Cohen isn't surprised by the news, saying Jews have been increasingly targeted by radical Muslims in France.

"My cousin there is a teacher there in France, and he was beat up in the school, and they go on the subways, they put on caps so people can't tell they are Jewish," he said.

Cohen shares the views of Muslims who gathered at the Capitol on Friday to condemn the killings in France, saying the killers don't represent the majority of Muslims and their beliefs.

"We as brothers and sisters of humanity have to stand up and have to fight against extremism of all kinds. This is not the first and may not be the last incident," said Irfan Haq with the Council of Sacramento Valley Islamic Organizations.

Cohen says the terror in Europe, especially the targeting of Jews, likely won't be the last incident.

"Europe is on fire like before the second World War," he said.
