Lawyers Seek Delay In Corruption Trial Of Former Sen. Ron Calderon

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Lawyers are seeking to further delay the public corruption trial of former state Sen. Ron Calderon and his brother until August.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers filed a stipulation Wednesday in Los Angeles federal court to move the trial from May 19 to Aug. 11 because they need to review about 280,000 pages of evidence.

The Montebello Democrat has pleaded not guilty to accepting $100,000 in bribes and trips in exchange for pushing workers' compensation legislation and a film industry tax credit scheme that was actually an FBI sting. His term expired at the end of the year.

Last March, Calderon said in a statement to The Associated Press that he wasn't resigning but will take time to focus on fighting the charges against him.

"I do not want to distract from the important work of the Senate and my colleagues on serious issues affecting my constituents and the people of California," he said.

Thomas Calderon, a former lawmaker-turned-lobbyist, has pleaded not guilty to laundering bribes through a tax-exempt group.

Ron Calderon was one of three Senate Democrats suspended last year because of felony charges.
