Fairytale Town Expansion Has Land Park Residents Concerned

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A heated dispute over the expansion of a popular Land Park attraction could be on the way for neighbors who live nearby.

The facility director of Fairytale Town says they're thinking of upgrading it, and expanding the park by half an acre toward some soccer fields and a picnic area nearby. The planning is in the very early stages.

"More literacy building activities, more focused learning activities, and a lot a place the community can use from time to time for community meetings," said Kathy Fleming.

Ken Mennemeier with the Land Park Community Association says he wants to hear all sides when it comes to changes to the 166-acre park.

"I do hope there is a pretty vigorous discussion of the issue and I certainly expect there will be opinions on both sides of the issue," he said.

If history is any indication, it could get heated.

In 2010, a consultant suggested the Sacramento Zoo, located in Land Park, expand. The zoo had no formal plans, but people still got upset, and the idea died.

Fleming says it would be years before any construction starts, assuming the city approves the plan.

"We both want land park to be a beautiful community asset. And Fairytale Town is a good steward of its current facility," she said.
