Sacramento Regional Transit Considering Changes After Shootings

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento Regional Transit officials got an earful from customers, and from within their own industry in the wake of two deadly incidents on its trains.

Last year, a panel of outside transit experts recommended Sacramento's RT officials improve security for passengers after a deadly shooting in January 2014, and another incident where officers were forced to shoot and kill a suspect on a train in March.

Recently, a local business advisory panel conducted its own investigation and found security is just one of the challenges facing RT. This week, they presented their recommendations to the board for improving the riding experience.

Some of the changes include better trash pickup and removal at bus stops and stations, as well as power washing, removing graffiti and making repairs. Echoing the panel, they also recommend increasing police staffing and security guards.

In the near future, they also recommend an improved working relationship with the city of Sacramento and the Kings regarding security for special events at the new arena.

RT General Manager and CEO Mike Wiley says they are listening.

"Our board of directors has formed a subcommittee to work very closely with staff and with the panel members and the public in reviewing our progress to create a safer, cleaner, more transit-friendly environment," he said.
