UC Davis Police Release Photo Of Sexual Assault Suspect

UC DAVIS (CBS13) — Police have released new surveillance images of a man they believe is behind a recent sexual assault on the UC Davis campus.

UC Davis Police are hoping someone out there recognizes the man who they believe assaulted a woman more than three weeks ago.

"I am appalled," said freshman Jade Mawhinney. "I'm grateful she was able to fight him off, but I'm just surprised that happened on my campus."

The victim and suspect met downtown late one night in January, then walked back to campus where officers say the man tried to rape her on the bike path near Kerr Hall at 2:30 a.m. She was able to push him off, and flag down a nearby UC Davis Safe Ride vehicle.

He was nowhere to be found.

Students admit they're on edge, but also say they're already taking precautions.

The search for the suspect comes at a time when the entire UC system is expanding its support system for sexual assault survivors, including hiring a full-time confidential advocate and establishing a support office on each campus. That came on the heels of reports that sexual violence was up 50 percent across the system.
