William Jessup University Breaks Ground On $10 Million Dorm

ROCKLIN (CBS13) - There's a lot of buzz on the Rocklin campus of William Jessup University about a new dormitory that's being built. Groundbreaking on the $10 million building took place on Monday.

The school is demolishing an existing building to make room for the three-story 40,000 square-foot structure that will go up near the new University Avenue entrance. It will house 200 students.

Students we spoke with were excited about the building both in terms of convenience and as a way to keep more students on campus.

"It's been such, like, a convenience to be able to live here," said junior Rebekah Ayala. "With late classes, and I'm a theatre major, so being involved with the musicals, I have to stay late. So it's so nice not to have to drive home and add that extra time."

"The community on campus is so much more endearing and so much more interwoven and knit that's it's a blessing just to be able to live on campus," said senior Taylor Moe. "And the more people we can bring on campus, the larger community we can have."

"It does provide, I guess you would say, the benefit of not having to worry about transportation -- students still have their cars – if you're on campus, that full experience, the relationship with the faculty, the relationship with the other students," said William Jessup University Chief Development Officer Eric Hogue.

The cost of the new dorms is being funded in part by donations from university supporters.

Students will be able to move in sometime in 2016.
