Officers Open Fire On Man After Chase From Stockton To Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – An hour-long car chase came to a violent end in Sacramento Saturday afternoon.

The chase started in Stockton then rolled through Interstate 5 and ended in gunfire in Sacramento, near headquarters for the California Highway Patrol.

Squad cars were left smashed in and scratched up, and had to be towed away from the scene after being damaged from a pit maneuver to bring the suspect's stolen truck to a stop

"I was driving by to pick up a friend at the bus station and I saw all these vehicles here and so I pulled over to see what was going on," said witness Keith Dobson.

The pit maneuvers didn't work.

Officers shot their suspect when he allegedly started driving towards them.

The gunshots followed a chase that started at a Stockton construction site, where the suspect allegedly stole the Ford Super Duty truck.

"The people on the construction site tried to stop him but he was able to elude them," Officer Michael Bradley said.

As the suspect was driving up I-5, calls started pouring in about equipment dangling from the truck. That's when CHP officers started pursuing the suspect.

There were numerous attempts to try to stop the vehicle using spike strips.

Even with blown-out tires, officers say he kept going.

He finally exited the freeway at Richards Boulevard, turned onto Bercut Drive and hit a dead end.

"It's scary, right in front of a McDonald's where everybody comes," witness Saul Robles said.

Robles was getting food with his mom when officers were putting caution tape up.

"A bullet could have gone off and hit someone else," Robles said.

The suspect has not been identified.
