Downtown Sacramento Hoping To Bring More Business To Weekends

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The skyline of Downtown Sacramento will start to change in the coming years, and it's all thanks to a series of new development projects.

During Tuesday's 17th annual State of Downtown, the city laid the groundwork for the next year of development, and they brought in an outsider to do it.

Mark Rowland, the keynote speaker at Tuesday's breakfast, helped revitalize downtown Las Vegas, and now he's bringing new ideas to Sacramento's downtown.

"We've funded a ton of really early-stage investments and that has attracted a lot of young really creative people," he said.

Along with new ventures, businesses that once abandoned downtown are returning.

"People saying they really want to be part of this momentum that's taking place downtown, we've got firms looking to move back to downtown that years ago left," said Downtown Sacramento Partnership director Michael Ault.

Sacramento resident Melody DiBenedetto thinks that would bring jobs.

"Sometimes you have to invest money in order to make money, and I think that if you invest money and you bring jobs back then people will be spending money here," she said.

"Downtown has got to be more than just a place people work," Ault said. "Monday through Friday downtown's got close to 100,000 employees, but that activity has got spill-off on evenings and weekends."
