Stockton Schools Beef Up Sporting-Event Security As Schools Move To Same League

STOCKTON (CBS13) — The Stockton Unified School District is beefing up security at athletic events in a push to keep weapons off of school grounds.

The district calls the move a precautionary measure now that all four Stockton high schools are in the same California Interscholastic Federation league. And parents at a basketball game on Tuesday said it was a great idea.

Security guards will use handheld metal detectors as folks walk in, check IDs and even go through backpacks and purses.

"We really don't try to turn anybody away," said spokeswoman Reyes Gauna, "but we want to make sure the kids that are there are here to root for their teams. Not there for something else."

She says it wasn't a particular incident, like the fight between a fan and a high-school basketball coach's wife last February, that sparked the decision. Instead, the move comes after all four Stockton schools are in the same league.

"We're being proactive rather than reactive," she said.
