Man Convicted Of Shooting Officers In Nevada County
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A Northern California man has been convicted of assaulting a federal ranger and a California Highway Patrolman during a shootout near a remote campground last summer.
A federal jury in Sacramento convicted Brent Douglas Cole Wednesday of wounding both officers with a deadly weapon and firing a gun during a violent crime.
The ranger was shot in the left shoulder and the CHP officer in the right leg.
Cole, who is 61, was struck several times.
Cole's attorney, J. Toney of Woodland, declined to comment Wednesday.
The June 14 shootout happened nine miles north of Nevada City as the federal Bureau of Land Management ranger and highway patrolman were impounding two motorcycles from Cole's makeshift campsite.
The assault charges each carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
