UC Davis Student Diagnosed With Meningococcal Disease
A UC Davis student is being treated at a local hospital after being diagnosed with having meningococcal disease.
UC Davis health officials reported the incident on Monday. They, along with the Yolo County Public Health Department are reportedly investigating the case and are providing antibiotics to those who may have come in contact with the student. Those people who may at risk of contracting the disease are those exposed to the sick student's respiratory and throat secretions through living in close quarters, or kissing or other prolonged close contact. Officials do not believe community members or UC Davis students in general need to receive treatment in connection with this incident.
The disease is a bacterial infection that can cause bloodstream infections and meningitis. The university says signs and symptoms can include:
* High fever
* Severe headache
* Rash
* Body aches/joint pain
* Nausea/vomiting
* Increased sensitivity to light
* Confusion
