Duplex Burns In North Highlands; Firefighters Say Defective Fire Hydrant Didn't Slow Effort
NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) — Firefighters weren't slowed by a defective fire hydrant at a duplex fire on Tuesday.
The fire in North Highlands started between the walls of both living spaces along Karm Way.
Firefighters say everyone was out of the house when they arrived, and managed to quickly knock down the flames. But a nearby fire hydrant was defective, forcing them to scramble to find a working one.
"It's not extremely common, but it does happen," said Sac Metro Fire battalion chief Tony Peck. "That's something that the engineer has to be aware of, and the captain as well if that happens, what the back up plan is going to be."
Sac Fire says they test fire hydrants, and work with the city and water works to make sure they're working properly.
They say the broken hydrant didn't cause any delay in fighting this fire, and the cause is under investigation.
