Overflow Crowd Calls For Loomis, Meadow Vista Libraries To Stay Open

LOOMIS (CBS13) — A standing-room only crowd pleaded their case to keep the Loomis Library open, as budget concerns could mean the end of its story.

The crowd was large enough that some had to peer in through the doors and windows to get a glimpse of the meeting.

Multiple generations came under one roof, hoping to preserve what their grandparents and parents had.

"People have a history here; they live on grandparents' land on parents' land," said Jan Chimera, with Friends of the Loomis Library.

Volunteers are hoping to save both the Loomis and Meadow Vista libraries from closing due to budget cuts. They gathered 1,400 signatures and passed out flyers to get the word out.

It's up to the Placer County Board of Supervisors to decide, but the Loomis librarian and director says she's recommending the board take down a couple of branches to keep the tree alive, so to speak.

"We have too many libraries for the amount of money were bringing in in property tax revenues," said Mary George.

She says the money would be better spent updating other libraries in Placer County, one of which is three miles away.

The decision on whether to close the library will be made on April 7, and supporters say that meeting will be packed as well.

If approved, the closures will leave 10 libraries for all of Placer County.
