Insurance Change Leaves Galt Boy Scouts Without Gun Range For Badges

GALT (CBS13) — Boy Scouts in Galt have been shut out of a city-owned gun range, following a change in the insurance policy.

Kade and Kallen Titus are brothers and Boy Scouts with a bevy of badges. Both were unhappy to learn the badges they earned at a local shooting range won't be available to other scouts.

The Galt City-owned range sits beyond a dirt road off of Twin Cities Road. CBS13 wasn't allowed on the private property, but it's similar to other outdoor ranges where shooters aim at targets and learn gun safety.

The city of Galt recently updated its liability insurance. According to the city's used contract, targeting groups who rent the facility must take out "liability insurance in the amount of at least $1 million per occurrence."

That's a number the Boy Scouts say they can't meet. The contract also says requires must pay $150 per day to use the range.

After nearly six years of using the range free of charge, the Boy Scouts may be forced to look elsewhere.

Galt city officials had the day off, and were not able to respond to our requests for comment.
