Mother, Son Die In Nevada City House Fire

NEVADA CITY (CBS13) — A fire tore through a small Nevada City home, trapping a mother and her disabled son inside. While the mother called 911 to get help, it would be too late.

The fire happened at around 4 a.m. on Friday off a quiet country road in Nevada City, lit up by flames and now shrouded in sorrow.

The damage seen from outside the home on Country Circle in Nevada City pales in comparison to the heavy toll left inside.

The mother and her adult son, who neighbors says was disabled, did not make it out.

"Interior crews went in, they did find two individuals located in one of the interior rooms. Both of those individuals were deceased," said Nevada County Fire Chief Jim Turner.

Investigators say the flames spread from a bedroom. The mother called 911, saying her son was trapped and couldn't move. Neither moved fast enough to escape the flames.

Their neighbor John said he would rarely see the mother and son outside their home.

"The mother and son have been pretty quiet," he said. "We'd see them every once in a while and wave as they drove by."

As his quiet morning lit up with sirens and smoke, he thought the flames would catch the trees outside his home.

"And then it was shortly after that the fire really kind of took off and was jumping maybe 30, 40 feet above the house," he said.

Crews kept the fire in check. Late Friday afternoon, as a team of investigators sifted through the charred debris shaking off the damage to look for clues, neighbors could only shake their heads.
