Cameron Park Man Arrested After Allegedly Shooting At Deputies

CAMERON PARK (CBS13) - An El Dorado County man is behind bars after a domestic dispute in Cameron Park on Monday morning allegedly led to shots being fired between he and deputies and his home going up in flames.

Deputies arrested Michael Hoffer, 44, of Cameron Park for assaulting a peace officer with a firearm, attempted murder and felony domestic battery stemming from this morning's incident at his home, which was destroyed.

At around 2:30 a.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department received a call of a domestic dispute in the 3000 block of Oakwood Road. When deputies arrived at the home, they were met by a woman. And while they were speaking to the woman, deputies noticed a man standing inside the home holding a rifle. He then reportedly began firing at deputies; and as he did so, a deputy was able to shoot back. Several nearby residences were then evacuated, according to the sheriff department's blog.

Shortly after shooting began, the home caught fire and was soon engulfed in flames. Flames eventually spread to the home next door.

"At first I didn't know if it was gunfire and so we weren't too concerned at first. I thought it might have been fireworks or something loud like that, and then it just continued. And that's when we got concerned and then we got up and looked out and the fire was going. It was huge," said Cliff Shoemaker, a neighbor. "Flames were 100 feet in the air, and embers were going even higher."

Firefighters had to stay back from the home because of the gunfire. Neighbors say the fire at that home burned unopposed for 20 minutes. Firefighters brought the fire at the neighboring home under control.

The investigation is said to be ongoing.
