Ground Breaks On The Barn In West Sacramento's Bridge District

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Crews broke ground on what was once was giant empty lot, but will soon be one of the most unique buildings in the Sacramento region.

In about a year, if you're driving over the Tower Bridge, you'll see a structure that's bound to grab your attention.

West Sacramento resident Adam Doyle jogs past a fenced-off area that will be the new home of The Barn. It's a building, and it's also a piece of art that will be the centerpiece to West Sacramento's Bridge District.

"We moved in about five years ago. There was nothing out here but it's coming together," he said.

Crews are digging sewer and utilities for The Barn now, which will have a restaurant, beer garden and play host to events and concerts.

In the next month, construction crews say vertical beams will go up, and by the summer, the unique wavy wooden structure will too.

That's one of the many reasons Chris Thornton and his girlfriend Krystle Richcreek moved to the Bridge District, and area next to Raley Field sprouting new sleek homes and apartments.

"I moved here from Atlanta a couple of years ago, I really just like the modern, modern aesthetics, you don't see anything like this in Sacramento," he said.

These two aren't alone—25 of the 32 homes here are sold, and in the next few months, 96 new apartments will go online. Developers say office and retail space will be next.

Krystal says what's happening in their backyard is exciting, and not just the burgeoning Barn. There is also talk of new ways to bring both sides of the river closer together.

"I think bringing in people from Midtown and Downtown to Raley Field, or for us here in West Sacramento to the arena would be awesome," she said.

The Barn is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016.
