Auburn Teacher Inspires Students To Win More Science Fair Awards Than Any School In Region

AUBURN (CBS13) — Call it a formula for success—a local teacher's students have won more science fair awards over the last decade than any other school in the region.

You wouldn't expect to hear about circadian rhythms, or bioluminescent behavior from middles schoolers, but these 12- and 13-year-olds from EV Cain Middle School are proud of their scientific knowledge.

For the last 12 years, their science teacher Don Scott has lead an effort to turn these small-town Auburn middle schoolers into scientists of the future by being an inspiration.

"I've seen students literally turn from an average student..a C type student. To an A, B, straight-A-type student, just because they are able to take ownership of their own education," he said.

And he's maintained an impressive record—400 students have competed at the regional and state level science fairs. More than 200 have taken home awards, which is more than any other school in the region.

"I feel like a proud papa," he said.

Some students are skeptical at first, but say it's Scott's own passion for science that makes them want to engage and look deeper.

Four of his students will compete at the upcoming state science fair, And 10 have been invited to submit their projects in a national competition.
