Two Men Convicted Of Stanislaus County Carjacking, First Degree Murder Sentenced To Prison

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - Two men have been sentenced in Stanislaus County Superior Court for first-degree murder and attempted carjacking in an encounter that took the life of a 21-year-old man nearly five years ago.

Superior Court Judge Scott Steffen on Monday sentenced 19-year-old Turlock Diaz to 52 years and six months to life in prison. Twenty-three-year-old Daniel Pantoja was sentenced 27 years and six months to life in prison.

Michelle Bettencourt, the mother of victim Chaz Bettencourt, tells the Modesto Bee she will attend every parole hearing for the two men convicted in her son's August 2010 shooting death outside a convenience store in Riverbank.

She says she told the defendants she will be "the nightmare to haunt your lives like you haunted mine."
