Friends Of 2 Davis Residents Killed In Suspected Murder-Suicide Holding Vigil Tonight

DAVIS (CBS13) - The friends of two Davis residents killed in what police is a murder-suicide on Thursday are holding a candlelight vigil tonight.

Whitney Engler, a fourth-year veterinary student at UC Davis, and her roommate Joe Hein were found shot to death at their Davis residence.

Police say a suspected shooter called 911 on Thursday night, reporting two people had been shot inside the home in the 2200 block of Glacier Drive. With little information to go on, police thought it was an ambush and set up a perimeter. Hours later, police entered the home and found the bodies of 27-year-old Engler and her roommate, 23-year-old Joe Hein. They had been shot.

Friends and family are shocked as they search for answers and Whitney's beloved dog Rosie, who likely got away when a police robot went inside the home.

"If it had to do with a depression or mental illness it's something that leaves everyone wondering why," said Lt. Tom Waltz a spokesperson for the Davis Police Dept.

The vigil starts at 8 p.m. outside the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.
