Teachers Union Demands CalSTRS Remove Investment From Gun Maker

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A teachers union is demanding a California teachers pension system pull its money out of gun-making investments.

Specifically, they're calling on the California State Teachers' Retirement System to remove all of its money from The Freedom Group, the maker of the assault rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

Grade school lingo is laying out new pressure on CalSTRS to divest its money in the company that makes the Bushmaster assault rifle.

The pension system promised to divest from the gunmaker two years ago. It dumped most of its stocks in makers of guns illegal in California at the time, but not all of them.

Now the pressure is mounting as California Treasurer John Chiang wrote a letter to the chairman of CalSTRS describing his frustration. A group of Sandy Hook parents also wrote an open letter to the pension system.
