Report Of Cockroach In Child's Drink Leads To Another Shutdown Of Modesto's Teriyaki King

MODESTO (CBS13) — A restaurant was shuttered by Stanislaus County health officials after a cockroach was allegedly found at the bottom of a child's drink.

Angelo Gomez is grossed out, but not surprised to hear what happened after his own experience at Teriyaki King.

"There was a cockroach on the counter and he just smacked it and went back to cooking my food, and I was like, 'Ew dude,'" he said.

County health inspectors went to the Modesto restaurant on East Hatch Road on April 1 for a new complaint of a cockroach in someone's drink. The Ceres Courier reported a mother was refilling her 3-year-old son's soda cup when she found a cockroach at the bottom.

On the day of the report, inspectors say they found many live roaches, returning April 2 to find even more, and finally ordering the restaurant closed on April 3 after finding a dozen live roaches that day.

Customers like Diana Avila say they aren't coming back.

"It is sick, it is sick, but you know, when it comes to food places so many people have gotten sick you know? That's unbelievable," he said.

Last July, the restaurant closed when inspectors found roaches and drains backed up with sewage. It was also shut down for a day in March after inspectors discovered live roaches on cooked rice and in a floor sink.

Employees appeared to be cleaning up when CBS13 showed up. They didn't deny a cockroach infestation has shut down the restaurant again.
