Man Pleads Guilty To Stealing CHP Officer's SUV During His DUI Arrest

FALLBROOK, Calif. (AP) - A man accused of stealing a California Highway Patrol cruiser while handcuffed and leading an officer on a 10-mile freeway chase has pleaded guilty to charges including felony auto theft.

The Riverside Press Enterprise newspaper reports 25-year-old Aaron Teruya also entered pleas Monday to resisting arrest and reckless driving with alcohol or drugs.

He is expected to receive one year in jail when he's sentenced April 28.

Police said Teruya was arrested March 10 on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was handcuffed and put in the front seat of a CHP SUV.

While the officer was distracted, Teruya drove away.

The officer got in a tow truck and told the driver to follow his SUV. Teruya was taken back into custody after running into thick brush off a dirt road.
