No Signs Of Highly Contagious Asian Dog Flu Yet In Sacramento Region

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Flu fears are spreading as a dog flu outbreak in the Midwest continues to grow.

The new flu strain is usually found in Asia, and is highly contagious. It can even be passed on to cats.

Experts tell CBS13 the dog flu epidemic hasn't hit in California yet, but there are things you can do to keep your family pets safe.

The dog park on Power Inn Road in Sacramento was filled with happy four-legged buddies and their owners who are just learning about the problems in the Midwest.

Veterinary hospitals in Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana are reporting more than 1,000 cases of dog flu, and at least six dogs have died. Animal experts say it's a new flu strain usually found in Asia and never seen in the U.S.

"It isn't a problem in California, at least not yet," said Sacramento SPCA surgeon Dr. Giselle Chan.

She says if the flu comes to California, pet owners should look for whether their dog becomes sluggish or tired, has a persistent cough, runny nose and fever.

If it shows symptoms, Chan recommends isolating your dog and getting them to a vet immediately.
