Ceres Police Officer Fired After Off-Duty Shooting In Alleged Affair

CERES (CBS13) — A Ceres Police officer who killed a man in an off-duty shooting is now out of a job, though the department isn't saying why he was fired.

Thomas Miller is now waiting for a criminal investigation to be completed stemming from a late-night meeting with a married woman that went terribly wrong.

Investigators believe an exposed marital affair may have led to the deadly shooting.

Police say on the night of the shooting, husband Jason Moland found his wife with Miller at a park. Investigators say Moland brandished what turned out to be a pellet gun at Miller, who shot and killed Moland.

Three weeks after the incident, the Ceres Police Department fired Miller, but they won't say if the investigation was the reason why.

Moland was pursuing his own law enforcement career and had service as a Modesto Police explorer. Now in a tragic twist, his death is being investigated by Modesto Police.
