CHP: Wrong-Way Driver Traveled More Than 5 Miles Before Crash That Killed 4

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A fiery crash claimed the lives of four people after a wrong-way driver traveled more than five miles on Highway 50 on Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Three men inside a truck that burst into flames after it was hit by a wrong-way driver.

Mario Torres was on the way to work at around 2:30 a.m. when he saw the burning truck and mangled Toyota Prius. Inside was a young woman, the wrong-way driver.

"The lady, I was touching her, to see if she would respond, she no respond for me, but she was still warm when I was touching her. I assume she wasn't alive anymore," he said.

He was right—she died at the scene.

Thursday, CHP  identified the young woman as 19-year-old Elizabet Torreszela.

Friday, the Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified all of the three men killed: 74-year-old Nick Bacareza, 76-year-old Tony Kilayko and 81-year-old Pepito Rivera.

People who called 911 said the wrong-way driver started on Harbor Boulevard in West Sacramento, driving several miles down the wrong way of a freeway, leading to questions whether that driver was intoxicated.

"It's very early to determine that, we will have to wait for the coroner's report," said CHP officer Michael Bradley.

Apartment manager Tina Licastro says she was shocked to hear what happened.

"A very pleasant young woman, quiet, never had any problems," she said.
