Denmark Outlaws Sex With Animals To Discourage Illicit Tourism

Which is more surprising: Denmark just outlawing sex with animals or 75 lawmakers voting against the ban?

According to the Associated Press, Danish lawmakers approved the new law Tuesday in a 91-75 vote.

The law was drawn up by Dan Joergensen, Denmark's farming minister, in order to help curb concerns that country wasn't doing enough to discourage animal-sex tourism.

"Animals are conscious creatures that can feel pain and fear, and in most cases they are unable to defend themselves. So in my opinion it is a very serious offence, when humans hurt animals," Jorgensen wrote in an April 16 release from his office.

If you have any doubts that animals don't feel emotions like we do, maybe you don't remember the story of Mr. G and Jellybean. Back in 2014, a video posted by the Grass Valley rescue group Animal Place showing the unlikely friendship between a burro and goat went viral.

Experts commenting on Mr. G and Jellybean's story confirmed that yes, were are not just anthropomorphizing animals. They really do feel pain and other human emotions.

Jorgensen and those in support of the bill appear to be following that line of thought.

Denmark now joins some of its neighbors – like Germany, Norway and Sweden – in banning sex with animals.
