Schools Team Up To Help Fix Bikes For The Homeless
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Two area schools teamed up to fix broken bicycles for the annual bike day at Sacramento's Loaves and Fishes.
Dozens of students got together to give back to their community, fixing up bikes for homeless like Reuban Dossman.
"It feels good to be here because I had just tore this bike up. I ran into a tree coming up the hill because I had to keep going over to keep somebody from hurting [themselves]," Dossman said.
It's a task the kids said they're glad to do.
"It feels great just knowing that it's not just going to where people can just buy them but somewhere where people really need them," said Seven Hills School student Kenton Boswell.
And that's the sort of mentality the man who started this whole project is trying to instill in them.
"What it has to do with is service learning," said Kevin Davis, teacher and Director of Bicycle Recycle Project. "Once they have that skill, they in my opinion need to be able to share it with people."
In their 15th year, the number of bikes given away has more than quadrupled – and the group of volunteers has doubled.
This year, Seven Hills was joined by Cooley Middle School to make sure they could help as many folks as possible.
"Part of it is that all the bikes that come through our program get donated back into the community in one form or another," said Jackie Musik, instructor for the Geared Up! Program.
It's something Dossman and those like him say they're grateful for.
"It's great to have this," Dossman said.
