After Hours-Long Standoff, Carmichael Shooting Suspect Surrenders Peacefully

CARMICHAEL (CBS13) -- Authorities say that the man suspected of shooting a woman and at deputies has surrendered peacefully.

Lisa Bowman with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department announced just after 3 p.m. that the suspect had come out and was taken into custody.

The standoff unfolded at a home near the corner of Madison and Manzanita avenues where the man barricaded himself inside a home.

It started around 9:30 a.m. Several witnesses said they heard multiple gunshots and saw a woman bleeding from gunshots wounds. When deputies arrived at a duplex at 6026 Madison Avenue, they found a woman on the ground in front of the home with gunshot wounds to the neck and stomach, according to reports.

A suspect who was in front of the home reportedly ran around to the back of the home, and a short time later, shots were fired in the deputies' direction from inside the home.

None of the deputies were hit. The woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a hospital.

"If her condition remains this condition or better, he'll be charged with assault with a deadly weapon," Bowman said. "However, every time he fired at anyone else - whether it was officers, citizens, the postal worker, anyone - those are separate counts of assault with a deadly weapon."

The suspect was later identified as 35-year-old Jeremiah Hankins. He has been booked at Sacramento County Jail.

Schools in the area were placed on lockdown. Students were later released securely, meaning parents had to show identification to pick up their children.

All roads in the area that were closed were reopened just before 3:30 p.m.
