Time Management Help Sacramento Events Manager Succeed

Shannin Stein is a manager of private events for a number of Sacramento institutions, like the vegetarian restaurant, Mother; the Crest Theater; and, opening in May, The Empress Tavern. She studied theater arts and fitness with a minor in biology. These fields seem unrelated, but, as Stein explains, the lessons learned in school are not always in the classroom.

Stein attended the small liberal arts college, Cornell College. Cornell touts a unique class schedule; a one-course-at-a-time educational plan. It's an experience that has shaped the way she does business.

What does your current job entail?

"Event planning, client focus, cost analysis, streamlining efficiency, and the ability to create an event for patrons they didn't know they wanted makes my job a blast."

What is your favorite part of your daily duties?

"The pure creativity. From designing the flora arrangements at events to planning my approach to the days activities. Everything I do changes from day-to-day. That's what makes this job so special."

Do you feel your education prepared you for your current role?

"Time management is the most important thing I learned. It supports the business and the things I do everyday. I found that the time management patterns I established in college stuck with me as I embarked in my professional life. And school was empowering. It empowered me to learn. My focus on communication skills was essential. "

Do you have any advice for people wanting to pursue a similar career?

"Took me a long time to find my path and that's okay. I wish someone had told me that. But, if you want to do something like this, you need a strong work ethic. Volunteer, intern every chance you get. Be confident and have a strong belief in yourself. Find your work/life balance."
