Sacramento Airport Runway Cleanup Hailed As One Of The Nation's Best

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Dozens of people walked around in a very unusual place—a runway at Sacramento International Airport.

Wednesday was the first time media has ever been allowed to see a runway walk in the name of safety.

The employees were on a scavenger hunt of sorts, looking for foreign object debris on their mile and a half walk.

It's something that could be as small as a pebble, but it's hardly insignificant when it comes to safety.

The Federal Aviation Administration requires all airports to keep runways clear of the debris, but the agency says Sacramento International Airport's program is the best in the business. The runways are visually inspected three times a day, a sweeper truck clears them once a day, and four times a year, dozens walk to inspect the runways.

Tom Dafoe won the prize for the most interesting discovery—a snake that met an unfortunate end.
