Esparto Boy, 13, Killed After Crashing Truck Father Let Him Drive

ESPARTO (CBS13) – A 13-year-old boy is dead after crashing his dad's truck in near Woodland while learning to drive, authorities say.

The crash happened just after 8:30 p.m. Friday night on northbound County Road 89 in unincorporated Yolo County.

California Highway Patrol said the boy was getting driving instructions from his father when the truck hit a 10-foot drainage ditch.

"It appears the driver was inexperienced and lost control of the vehicle," said Sgt. Brent Shultz from CHP.

The father has major injuries and was transported to the hospital. Both are said to be Esparto residents.

Speed and alcohol were not a factor, CHP says.
