Nevada City Preps For Next Stage Of Tour Of California

NEVADA CITY (CBS13) – Stage one of the men's Amgen Tour of California breezed through Sacramento with a lot of excitement.

Mark Cavendish crossed the finish line to victory.

"It's always a great turnout here in Sacramento, so to win here in front of such great people, it's really nice," Cavendish said.

But now it's time to pick up, because the race is moving more than 50 miles away to Nevada City where other crews have been hard at work setting the stage.

"It just really energizes a town of our size any time we have something this large come through," said City Councilmember Duane Strawser.

This will be the third year the tour winds its way through Nevada City. Strawser says the race brings a big boost to the tourism town.

"The worldwide attention we get through the media and marketing, you can't even put a price tag on that," Strawser said.

Local business owners, including Shana Maziarz of Three Forks Bakery and Brewing Company, have been swamped preparing for the big day – and all the visitors.

"We're a pretty small town, and so I think that feeling of just swelling and bursting at the seams is something we don't get to experience that often," Maziarz said.

And the tip jars will likely be stuffed as well.

"Oh I hope they're overflowing for our staff," Maziarz said.

The city estimates the Amgen tour will pump in about $2 million to the local economy.

Stage two starts in Nevada City at 11 a.m. Monday and finishes in Lodi.
