Wrong-Way Crash On I-80 Kills 3 People In Sacramento County

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) - For the third time in just 20 days, a wrong-way crash claims the lives of multiple people.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, a driver in a new Ford F-150 pick-up truck without license plates was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 when it struck a Lexus head-on in the fast lane near Madison Avenue, according to a CHP statement.

The driver of the truck was killed, along with the two people in the Lexus. After the crash, the truck caught fire. The front portion of the truck now appears to be completely burned.

The two victims in the Lexus were men in their 20s. The car was registered in San Francisco.

Lanes of Interstate 80 were closed for hours.

CHP officers say they received multiple 911 calls reporting the truck had entered the freeway going the wrong way at Watt Avenue. Police responded immediately, but it was too late. The truck drove the wrong way about mile before the crash happened.

On April 22, a wrong-way crash on westbound Highway 50 near Stockton Boulevard killed four people. A Toyota Prius collided with a pick-up truck, killing the driver of the Prius and three people in the pick-up truck.

The driver of the Prius, 19-year-old Elizabet Torreszella, drove more than five miles in the wrong direction before the crash.

And back on January 10, three people were killed in a wrong-way crash in the same area as this morning's crash. Officers say the driver, 24-year-old Aaron Jordon Caudillo, had been under the influence of alcohol. Caudillo will be in Sacramento County court this morning for a hearing related to the crash.
