A Career In Nursing Is A Smart Choice For Sacramento Students

With a growing baby boomer population continuing into their retirement years and a large influx of new patients thanks to the availability of healthcare from the Affordable Care Act, the demand for jobs in healthcare, specifically nursing, has never been higher. For those in the Sacramento area, this couldn't be further from the truth. According to Labor Market Information from the Employment Development Center of California, registred nurses are one of the largest growing careers in Sacramento County. From now till 2022, more than 6,350 new nursing jobs are projected to be added in Sacramento and its surrounding areas. This data is further backed up at a national level with the Bureau of Labor Statistics citing Nurse Practitioners as being one of the fastest growing occupations as of late. In less than ten years, jobs for nurse practitioners will increase by 33.7 percent.

According to California Health Line in a recent survey they found that newly graduated nurses had a better chance of landing a job in the nursing industry if they continued on to receive their bachelor's of nursing or collaborated with local hospitals to gain valuable nursing experience right out of college. Sacramento is a prime location for finding a job with local hospitals as there are simply not as many nursing school as in Southern California or the greater Bay Area. The article does confirm previous information from EDD and the BLS that as the Affordable Care Act rolls out, the rate for the demand of nurse practitioners will further increase.

The signs for the need of more nurse practitioners are already inadvertently showing up throughout greater Northern California. California lawmakers are already pushing for funds to construct a new V.A. Clinic in nearby Stockton's French Camp district citing a need for better resources for a growing veteran population in California. In a few months, those that used to work in Sutter Memorial Hospital will be ushered into their newer, much larger facility in midtown Sacramento. According to the article, "Sutter is training staff and stocking the place."
