9 People Shot Monday Night In Stockton In 5 Separate Incidents

STOCKTON (CBS13) - Police in Stockton are investigating a series of shootings Monday night that left nine people injured.

In a statement Tuesday, police called the shootings "intolerable" and say the incidents appear to be related to "ongoing group or gang conflicts."

All of the shootings happened between 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

The first shooting happened at 8:30 p.m. on 8th and Lincoln streets. A woman was driving home with her teenage daughter when a vehicle pulled up and started shooting at them. The woman was hit in the arm. She went to a nearby hospital where she was treated, according to a statement from Stockton police.

The woman says she did not recognize the suspects or the vehicle, which she described as a black SUV – possibly a Chevrolet Suburban. The shooter is described as a 20-year-old male Hispanic adult with short hair. The driver is possibly a Hispanic man with long hair.

At 8:47 p.m. police received another call of shots fired in the 1500 block of Spring Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the knee. A second man believed to have been shot at the same time, was brought to an area hospital later with a gunshot wound to his leg. Police say they found about 20 shell casings at the scene of the shooting.

Less than 15 minutes later, police went to 1000 N. Wilson Way police found two men with gunshot wounds to their stomachs. A third adult victim was found at the Capri Motel with a gunshot wound to the knee. The suspects were reportedly driving in a black Chevrolet Suburban. All three victims were treated at the hospital. The two shot in the stomach are expected to survive, say police.

At 10:07 a 17-year-old teen was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Police say he told them he was shot while in the area of California and Park streets, but wouldn't say anything else about how he was shot.

A vehicle was driving north on West Lane near Morada Lane at 10:23 p.m. when a dark, older-model Dodge SUV pulled up and fired five rounds at the victims' vehicle, hitting two children inside. They were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspects in that incident are described as Hispanic males in their 20's wearing t-shirts, police say.

A message posted by the Stockton Police Department on Facebook reads: "It's very unfortunate that we saw a spike in shootings towards the end of the Memorial Day Weekend. Whenever we see a spike like this, there is an immediate analysis done so we can determine what caused the spike and implement which policing strategy is best to combat it. The important thing to remember is it's not uncommon to see a spike in crime, but when you have five shootings with nine victims in less than a couple of hours, that is intolerable."
