Proposed Bike Share Program Would Stretch From Davis To Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — At a time of rising gas prices, leaders in three cities are considering a new way to get around the area.

Deanna Summers came out for some exercise on Tuesday, renting a bike at a shop in Old Sacramento, but a new rental option could be on the way to the river city.

Under the proposal, riders would pay a daily, monthly, or yearly fee to access bikes parked throughout Sacramento, West Sacramento and Davis.

Sam Shelton with the Sacramento Area Council of Governments says it will cost nearly $5 million to start, all of which is already available through federal transportation grants. But there are also yearly operation costs.

"That could cost anywhere from $1 million, to $1.5 million a year to operate and maintain," he said.

Shelton says riders will pay for some of that, but it won't cover everything,. Sponsorships or even help from local governments would also likely be needed.

Summers says the program could be a big hit with state workers needing a quick connection from light rail.

"I think the exercise for people is important," she said. We're a society whose portions seem to keep getting bigger and bigger, so ya, that would be a great idea."
