40 Years Later: From Basketball To Governor To Drought, History Repeating In California

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — From basketball to politics, history seems to be repeating itself in California this year.

The Golden State Warriors are in the NBA Finals for the first time in 40 years. Back then, Jerry Brown was also the governor of California and the state was in a historic drought.

The last time the Warriors made the finals was in 1975. Things may have been a bit different then. We dressed differently, but it just goes to show, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Back then, Brown was a new governor on the cover of People as the far-out candidate who puzzles almost everybody. Turn the page, and you find a flexing Arnold Schwarzenegger.

There were also drought headlines and comparisons to "The Grapes Of Wrath" and concerns of water grabs.

On the street, we looked for someone who remembered 1975's drought and found the director of water resources, Reggie Robie.

"During [Gov. Brown's] first term, it was the worst drought in history. until this one," he said.

It's a case of California repeating history with water, politics and championship basketball.

By the way, an NBA finals ticket in 1975 could be found for $9. In 2015, they're going for $600 and up.
