Fallen Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy's Memorial Bench Stolen

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) — A memorial bench for a fallen Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy has been stolen, the department said on Thursday.

Deputies discovered last week that the bench honoring deputy Jeff Mitchell went missing, but the department verified on Thursday the bench had been stolen and not simply removed for maintenance.

Mitchell was killed in the line of duty on October 27, 2006 during what seemed like a routine traffic stop with his own weapon.

The vehicle was a suspicious white van with no rear license plate. And hidden inside were two bodies. Investigators strongly suspect that 43-year old Allan Shubert and 28-year old Nicole Welch were already dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. And someone had to dispose of their bodies – someone with a strong motive to cover up their deaths.

His death remains a mystery, and no one has been arrested in his murder.

Detectives believe the bench disappeared between mid-April and mid-May, and are looking for help narrowing that timeline.

Anyone with information can contact the department at (916) 874-5388

CBS13 spoke with Crystal Mitchell back in 2011 near the five-year anniversary of her husband's death.

"As long as this murder is unsolved, I will fight for him," Crystal Mitchell told CBS 13 in an exclusive interview.
