Controversial Sacramento Commons Development Wins Approval From Planning Commission

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A controversial proposal for new downtown high-rises unanimously passed the Sacramento Planning Commission, despite strong objections.

The proposal calls for tearing down the low-rise Capitol Villas apartments and turning the site into high-rise apartments, commercial space and possibly a hotel.

Dozens spoke out at the meeting on the proposal to tear down more than 200 low-rise apartments.

Developers are proposing converting the development originally built in the 1960s into a high-rise building called Sacramento Commons that would house at least 1,300 apartments, more than 50,000 square feet of commercial space and even a hotel.

The project would also add four new parking structures, but people opposed to the project don't want to see the removal of almost 200 trees to build it.

Ty Hudson, with a local hotel workers union says the Sacramento Commons project would also create jobs.
