U.S. Senior Open: Golfers, Spectators Battle Triple-Digit Temperatures
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The heat in Sacramento forced a warning to U.S. Senior Open spectators, but the event went off without a hitch in scorching temperatures on Thursday.
It was a cool 7 a.m. start for the tournament at Del Paso Country Club, but it heated up quickly into the triple digits.
But this is Sacramento in June, and people were ready. Many wore hats and wore out some shady grass.
As scores stayed low, the temperatures climbed high and triple digits played through. Swamp coolers were par for the course, and any sort of covering made the cut.
The USGA eased restrictions on the event, allowing spectators to bring in bottled water. The 2,600 purple-shirted volunteers directed people to first-aid cooling stations.
As for the golfers, the hot afternoon took its toll. Six of the Top 7 players on the leaderboard played in the morning, including leader Tom Watson at -4.
