Drewski's Owner's Dog Shot In Suspected Burglary

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) — The owner of a popular local food truck is mourning the loss of his dog who was shot and killed when his home was burglarized, and the suspect is still on the loose.

It wasn't just the ransacked furniture that caught Andrew Blaskovich off-guard when he returned home at around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday.

His 2-year-old great dane didn't jump up to meet him at the door like usual.

"I walked really quickly over here like, 'What's going on?'" he said.

That's when he noticed a pool of blood in the living room. He followed the blood on the floor to his bedroom where he found Rex. He was already dead.

"He was able to drag himself to his favorite spot after he was shot and he protected us to the end," he said.

Blaskovich doesn't know why someone would break in or what they could have been looking for. He and Sacramento Police are still looking into whether anything was taken. He does know whoever broke in left him with the biggest loss.

"A dog is like a person to me, it's like a family member," he said. "Somebody that's going to shoot a dog is somebody that's obviously sick and twisted and just pure evil."

Rex wasn't just family. Fans of Blaskovich's food truck, Drewski's, were familiar with his face. The 130-pound dog would accompany his owner to events. His likeness would stare out at diners at the Drewski's restaurant.

Now Blaskovich is holding on to memories of his best friend, and his promise to find out why someone would do something so cruel.

He's offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of who is responsible. If you have any information, call him at (916) 502-0474.
