Sky Fire Burns 150 Acres Near Vacaville
VACAVILLE (CBS13) — Hundreds of firefighters are monitoring the Sky Fire, which has already burned 150 acres and threatened dozens of homes.
Preston Dougherty came with his dad to take pictures of the firefighting effort. He's only 15, but he watched closely. He wants to be a firefighting pilot someday.
"I've taken couple hundred of them now," he said.
His focus was on the growing plume of smoke billowing up the hill from his home, and feet away from dozens of his neighbors on Mix Canyon road, nestled in beautiful wine country near Vacaville.
"There's a pond right over this ridge they've been scooping the water out of," he said.
Helicopters dumped loads of water and painted the hills red with fire retardant. Hand crews hiked for miles.
Strong winds fueled the flames. Firefighters say the smoky car is to blame after it caught fire early in the day.
