Mild Weather Could Bring Hot Attendance To California State Fair

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The 162nd California State Fair got off to a surprisingly mild start in terms of weather on Friday.

With temperatures in the low 80s, it fit this year's fair motto—The Best.

"We usually don't come to the fair because it's so hot and we thought we'd come today because the weather's amazing," said Adria Bossard.

"When I don't see triple digits, I am very excited in Sacramento," said Ron Peet with The Bacon Habit.

So what are some of the best things to do here at Cal Expo? The baby barn is a crowd pleaser, where expecting animals could give birth any day.

"As a city girl, It just is amazing," said fair spokeswoman Lara Popyack. "It really is amazing."

Keeping with critters, the Beach Buddies exhibit shows off rescued animals like river otters and even a bald eagle. The exhibit won a Conservation Corps award for its important environmental message.

"People think that only stuff we do on the coast affects the coast," said Joseph Kerschner, "when really what we do here affects it as well, due to runoff, trash just floating into the ocean."

The Tree Circus, we're told, is one of the hidden gems of the State Fair, where people can harness up and learn rope climbing like arborists do.

"It takes a lot of cognitive thinking and a good bit of muscle too. But it's surprising folks who say, 'I can't do this.' And the next thing you know, just in a few minutes, they're up there and they don't want to come down," said Tim Womick.
