8:50: p.m. UPDATE: The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office confirmed Matthew Graham was the man killed in a shootout in a brief release late Monday.

DUNSMUIR (CBS13) — The father of a missing baby in Shasta County is believed to be dead after a shootout with deputies in Siskiyou County.

Matthew Graham was on the run, wanted on charges unrelated to the disappearance of Baby Ember. But he was the only person of interest in the disappearance of his 6-month-old child.

Deputies will not say for sure that it was Graham who was shot and killed, but all indications are that is exactly who they confronted on Monday morning.

Ember Graham had been reported missing from Shasta County on July 2. Graham was said to be the last person to see his daughter alive. He said he went to bed, woke up, and she was gone.

But deputies say his story didn't add up, and surveillance video put his story into doubt. Muller was eventually taken into custody on unrelated probation violations.

After his release days later, his mother reported he stole her gun, cash and cellphone and took off.

Deputies reported to a carjacking at gunpoint in Shasta Lake on Monday morning where victims identified the suspect as Graham.

Deputies used the car's anti-theft GPS to locate the suspect in a garage of a home. When they converged, he got into a gun battle with deputies and was shot and killed.

The Shasta County Sheriff says if the suspect is indeed Graham, finding Ember will be that much harder as the man they believe to be the last to see her died with that knowledge.

He does not believe Ember is alive, but says the discovery of the body would bring some closure to her family.
